Tech Giants’ Software & Hardware Offerings MAPPED

The products and services of tech giants Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon have found their way into almost every household. I thought it’d be fun to TABUL8TE their various offerings to see how many aspects of a digital native’s life they have captured.

TABUL8TOR’s thoughts:

  • Microsoft’s crowning glories are its desktop OS, office software (Office 365) and email solution (Outlook). While it had a headstart in the web-browser space, its Internet Explorer is now lagging far behind Google’s Chrome and other newer web-browsers. If it doesn’t watch its tail, GSuite may soon overtake Office 365 as well.
  • Apple is in its own non-interopable little bubble.
  • Google has got its toes dipped in every pie. They’ve got some major trophies like Google (the search engine), Android, Chrome and YouTube. But not all offerings have met with widespread success. Had not heard of Google Messages prior to researching this post. Google+ is also pretty much on life support.
  • Facebook dominates the social media and messaging space but has not ventured out much beyond that. Their next foray appears to be in the fintech / payments space, with their controversial Libra cryptocurrency triggering a race by sovereign governments to issue their own Central Bank Digital Currencies. Also, Facebook Pay needs a logo.
  • Amazon hasn’t really branched out from its core of e-commerce and web-hosting, apart from it’s 2014 acquisition of streaming site Twitch.

TABUL8TOR’s thoughts:

  • Microsoft has tripped up a couple of times on the mobile device stage — discontinuing the Windows phone, buying then off-loading Nokia… But its not giving up! It’s launching two hybrid products in 2020 — Surface Duo (phone-tablet) and Surface Neo (Fablet /Tablet-Labtop).
  • Apple’s products are first in class in terms of style. No one else comes close to their sleek airpods in the ear piece category. Are they worth that hefty price tag though?
  • Google has (again) got its toes dipped in every pie. Their cloud-gaming service, Stadia, looks set to be a huge game-changer 😏. The branding in the headset / ear piece category needs some sprucing up.
  • Facebook has stayed out of the competition in most of the hardware arena save for the mostly unconquered new frontier that is AR/VR products.
  • Amazon’s fire products (both tablet and tv box) need better marketing.

Let me know if I missed any products/services out!
